Pumpkin picking and carving near Worcester

Bennetts Willow Barn, Lower Wick (WR2 4BS). The farm grows its own pumpkins from seed and you pick them from the plant in the field: “No pumpkins bought in and placed around a field here!” The patch opens on Sunday 4 October and runs to Thursday 29 October. In term time it opens Thursdays and Fridays 10am to 2pm and weekends 10am to 3pm; in half term week it opens every day, 10am to 3pm, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Entry is from £4 a person booked at least 24 hours ahead, £1.50 more on the day, and under-twos are free. Pumpkins are charged on top by size. Entry covers carving in the polytunnel, photo backdrops, a mini digger and tractor gravel pit and a small craft activity, and you can feed the scoopings to the pigs. Dogs on leads are welcome. It is a working field, so the farm asks for wellies, trousers and gloves. Parking is in the farm café car park, then follow the signs on foot up the track (Bennetts Willow Barn, pumpkin patch).

Pumpkin Patch After Dark runs on Friday 23 and Friday 30 October, 4.30pm to 8.30pm, with the field lit by fairy lights, stone-baked pizza, the farm’s own hog roast, marshmallows and live music. It is booked separately (Bennetts Willow Barn).

Little Owl Farm Park, Dunhampton (DY13 9SS). The “Spooky Harvest Festival” runs for nine days, Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November. Included with admission: a new Witches Flying School, a potion class and the farm’s two “dragons”. Extras cost £4 pre-booked (chocolate apple, glow-in-the-dark munchkin pumpkin) and £1 for marshmallow toasting. There is no pumpkin field this year: the farm has dropped its tractor rides to the top fields and sells pumpkins in a new area, Cobweb Hollow (Little Owl Farm Park). Half term is charged at the standard rate: £13.95 adult, £13.50 child (2 to 15) booked online, £1 more at the door (prices).

Webbs, Wychbold (WR9 0DG). Pumpkin carving from Monday 26 to Saturday 31 October, hourly sessions through the day. £7.50 a child includes a 15 to 20cm pumpkin, carving tools and a battery tealight (Webbs).

Visit Worcestershire also lists pumpkin patches at Churchfields Farm, Salwarpe and Top Barn, Holt Heath. Neither farm’s own website loaded when we checked on 4 October, so we have not printed their dates or prices.

Halloween in the city

Bridges of Light, Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October, 6pm to 9pm. Severn Arts’ light festival returns for its second year: free, unticketed and “designed for all ages”. This year’s line-up includes Seven Echoes by Illuminos, projected across Worcester Bridge, and Containers, 34 lit cubes stacked into arches in Cathedral Square (Severn Arts). Full details are on our Bridges of Light page.

The Commandery, Sidbury (WR1 2HU) has the most Halloween in one place (Museums Worcestershire):

  • The Witch’s Potion trail, Friday 23 October to Sunday 1 November, closed Mondays. £1 a child plus general admission (free with a Worcester Residents’ pass).
  • A Spook-tacular Family Morning, Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 October, 10.30am to 12 noon, for pre-school to 11. £5.50 a child, book online.
  • After-dark tours “with a Halloween twist”, Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 October at 6.30pm and 8pm. £16.50, ages 14 and over (Museums Worcestershire).

Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, Foregate Street (WR1 1DT) runs a £1 Frightful Fairytales trail and £2.50 activity bags from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, closed Mondays. Entry to the museum is free (Museums Worcestershire).

Spellbound: The Enchanted Path to Wizardry, Spetchley Park Gardens (WR5 1RS). Sunday 25 October to Sunday 1 November. Spetchley has published the dates but not the times or any extra charge (Spetchley Park Gardens).

Halloween night, Saturday 31 October

  • The Commandery Halloween Ghost Hunt, 8pm to 2am, run by Fright Nights Worcestershire. £40, over 18s only, and the listing says no pregnant women (Skiddle).
  • The Birds, Swan Studio, The Moors (WR1 3ED), 7.45pm. Conor McPherson’s thriller runs Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October. £15 plus a £3.50 transaction fee (Worcester Theatres).
  • Guns Or Roses, The Marrs Bar, Pierpoint Street (WR1 1TA). A Guns N’ Roses tribute. £15 in advance, £18 on the door (The Marrs Bar).

Getting there

Network Rail is working on the line west of the city all half term week. No trains call at Foregate Street from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 October; trains to Birmingham and London use Shrub Hill, and buses replace trains to Great Malvern and Hereford (National Rail). That covers both Bridges of Light evenings. Car parks and evening charges are on parking in Worcester, and road closures on Worcester roadworks and travel.

Still to be confirmed

  • Spellbound at Spetchley: times and price.
  • Bridges of Light: the full map. Severn Arts says to “keep checking back for programme updates”.
  • Churchfields Farm and Top Barn: dates and prices, from the farms themselves.

We will re-check all of these in mid-October.
